5 Healthy Local Foods You Can Order For Your Next Meal

One of Singaporeans’ favourite pastimes is dining out. We love looking for new places to dine at and new cuisines to try. However, as we eat out most of the time, it is important to get the essential nutrients that our bodies need to stay healthy. Most hawker fare contains large amounts of oil and is high in saturated fat.

What are the healthier choices available to us?

Here are five of the healthier hawker food options you can choose to indulge your taste buds without guilt.

1. Yong tau foo

This is a great option as you are in charge of exactly what goes into your meal. A wide variety of healthy ingredients such as green leafy and cruciferous vegetables, tofu, fish paste and many others ensure that you can get at least a serving out of the five recommended servings of vegetables each day.

Stay away though from the deep fried choices as these are high in fat and calories.

2. Fish slice soup
Another great choice for healthy eating. Slices of fresh fish, cubes of silken tofu, tomatoes and seaweed make this soup a good choice as it is low in fat and high in protein from the fish. Remember to ask for the clear broth instead of the version that contains milk.

3. Fishball kway teow noodles

Fishball noodle soups contain only 329 kilocalories and 3 grams of fat per serving, as opposed to mince meat noodles which contain 380 kilocalories and 12 grams of fat, i.e. four times the number of fat. Always ask for “NO Lard and less oil” when ordering your meal.

4. Porridge
Porridge is also a healthy choice as it contains a good mix of carbohydrates and protein. Remember when you were sick and all you wanted was a bowl of piping hot porridge? Choose dishes like vegetables and boiled or steamed meat instead of fried dishes to complement your bowl of porridge.

5. Herbal soup

Herbal soups are not only tasty but also full of nutrients. Choose from a variety of combinations like lotus root and pork ribs soup, watercress and pork ribs or herbal ginseng soups that will nourish the body. Order side dishes like brown rice and a plate of steaming hot vegetables to complete your healthy yet satisfying meal.
